BLUFFTON, SC Close to 80 talented young golfers will journey from all over the world to the Belfair Golf Club in Bluffton, SC, July 7 – 10 for a chance to be named the 2011 Players Amateur Champion and earn an exemption into the 2012 RBC Heritage. The Players Amateur is one of the most well respected tournaments in amateur golf. Many past participants have been successful at making the transition to the pro circuit. Ben Curtis, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Bill Haas and Camilo Villegas are just a few that all are now well known on the PGA TOUR. Heading up the list of impressive commitments is former English and British Boys Golf Champion Tom Lewis. The 20-year-old from Hertfordshire, England was the number 1 ranked amateur in England in 2010. He currently holds the number 2 spot on the GolfWeek/Sagarin World Amateur rankings. Earlier in the month, he captured the St. Andrews Links Trophy on The Old Course. He is a member of the English Golf Union’s elite England Squad. Fayetteville, North Carolina native David Chung is also in the field. The rising junior at Stanford University is a seasoned competitor. The 20 year-old is currently #3 in the GolfWeek/Saragin world amateur rankings. In the summer of 2010 he helped defeat Europe at the Palmer Cup by being undefeated in all four matches. He also won the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club. He competed in the 2011 Masters and US Open but did not make the cut at either event. The popular Aussies are back in the field. The crew from the land down under is led by Ben Campbell and Matthew Stieger. Campbell is ranked #4 by GolfWeek and Stieger is currently in the #7 spot. Two local golfers are also in the field. University of South Carolina-Beaufort student Christopher Lane II qualified to play and Coley Davis, a Belfair resident, will play in his second Players Amateur event.
