LIGHTNING STOPS PLAY

Berkeley Hall Golf Club, Bluffton, SC (July 11, 2013) The sun was still shining on Thursday when Vanderbilt University’s Hunter Stewart signed his scorecard after completing his first round at the 14th annual Players Amateur. The rising Junior shot a bogie free 8-under 64, carding 6 birdies and 1 eagle, making him the leader in the clubhouse.

It was noon and he and the rest of his group were taking a half hour break then going back out for the second round. Tournament Officials had made a decision on Wednesday to try to complete the first and second rounds on Thursday because bad weather was forecasted. Stewart told reporters, “I like the fact that we have 18 more to go. I’ve played a nice morning round, I’ve just got to keep the momentum.”

His momentum only lasted for a few holes when the horn sounded and play was suspended due to lightning in the area at 2:00 pm. The contestants went out onto the course again at 3:45 pm but play was suspended a second time due to lightning. Tournament Officials made the decision to resume play on Friday at 9 am.

Seven groups must still complete their first rounds.

Chase Koepka from Lake Worth, Florida and UC Berkeley’s Michael Weaver are both tied for second with 5-under par rounds of 67.
