THE PLAYERS AMATEUR AT BELFAIR DRAWS TOP YOUNG GOLFERS

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — The top amateur golfers in the country as well as several from foreign countries will be converging on Belfair next week for the Tenth Anniversary of The Players Amateur. Play will be conducted over Fazio’s West course, July 6-12. Last year’s champion, Mark Anderson of nearby Beaufort, will be defending his crown in the tournament presented by Verizon and conducted by the Heritage Classic Foundation, with Steve Wilmot serving as Tournament Director. Several prominent golf names highlight the impressive field including Oklahoma State’s rising Junior Kevin Tway, son of veteran PGA TOUR star Bob Tway, the 1995 champion of the Verizon Heritage. Others that fans should keep their eyes on are Sam Saunders, of Orlando, FL, the grandson of the King, Arnold Palmer. Also Peter Kostis’ son, John has committed from Paradise Valley, AZ. Peter Kostis is the famed on-air swing analyst for CBS golf. Another noteworthy entry is Reed Howard, son of Ron Howard, now one of Hollywood’s top directors, who gained early fame on TV as “Opie” on the Andy Griffith Show. There are at least eight entries from Australia, including National Squad members: Dan Nisbet, Jordan Sherratt, Ryan McCarthy and Dan Beckmann. Please call the Heritage Classic Foundation Offices at 843.671.2448 for sponsorship and spectator information.
