Bluffton, SC (July 8, 2016) Sunny skies and hot temperatures prevailed throughout the first round of the 17th annual Players Amateur at Berkeley Hall Golf Club’s South Course in Bluffton, South Carolina.
Clemson golfer and ACC Freshman of the Year, Bryson Nimmer shot a 5-under 67 to share the lead after the first round. Berkeley Hall is the Bluffton native’s home course and he enjoyed having friends and family close by, “Obviously, there is a lot of expectation here. Just to be able to play well, no matter where you are, is always good. I just need to keep doing it this week and keep making some putts.” Playing close to home also has other advantages after the round, “I am going to lay by the pool, go swimming a little bit and take a break,” said Nimmer on his way to the practice range after his round.
Australian Anthony Quayle also finished his round at 5-under. The 21-year-old finished second at last week’s Dogwood Invitational and is hungry for a win during his eighth straight week of competition. “I wanted to make sure I enjoyed myself and burnt up as little energy as I could and I think I did that to the best of my ability today.” He went on to say the highlight of his round was his hole out for eagle on hole #9. “It sat on the lip there for a few seconds then dropped as I was walking up to it, so that was a nice little finish to the front nine.”
Australian Cameron John and UGA incoming freshman Spencer Ralston finished the day tied for third place after they both birdied the 17th and 18th holes.
